Makayla “Kayla” Castro, 18, an Escondido woman who sustained injuries from a fall of over 60 feet from Camelback Mountain near Phoenix on April 20, died on Sunday.
Miss Castro’s mother, Allison Castro posted the news of her death on a blog that the family had used to raise money to help pay for the victim’s medical care after she fell during a rock-climbing trip.
EscoGelato in Escondido held a fundraiser for Miss Castro over the weekend and the family raised $30,000 on a GoFundMe account.
Witnesses saw her fall, and called the ambulance, which took her to a Phoenix hospital.
Mrs. Castro wrote, “She fought so hard, but her injuries were just too much for her to overcome.”
The victim was a 2015 San Pasqual High School graduate. She was a freshman attending classes at Grand Canyon University, in Phoenix.
