Capt. William S. Richards, Jr., MD and Board Certified Surgeon, died Monday, June 26, 2017 at his home in Vista, California.
Dr. Richards was born November 14, 1926 in Seattle, Washington and attended Roosevelt High School and Seattle Pacific College. He graduated from the University of Washington and the (new) University of Washington Medical School, receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1951. He joined the U.S. Public Health Service, and served in the Coast Guard as well as Naval Hospitals in Portland, Oregon, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Staten Island, New York, where he was head of surgery.
In 1967, he moved to Vista, California and entered private practice. In 1977, he re-entered the USPHS and was assigned as one of 10 regional directors of HEW’s public health program, based in Dallas. Following cuts in both USPHS and HEW, Dr. Richards finished up his career with assignments in Long Beach and San Diego, retiring in 1983.
He attended church in Escondido and had many associations there.
Dr. Richards enjoyed reading, travel, gardening, cooking, classic movies, and spending time with his grandchildren and family. He met his wife, Cecile, at the First Baptist Church in Seattle. They married in 1950, and enjoyed 67 years together. Survivors include his wife, Cecile, their children Helen, Steven, Susan, and John, grandchildren Michael, John, William, and Robert, and great-grandchildren William and Erik. A memorial service at North Coast Church will be held when the family gathers in August.
