On June 27 volunteers from the WeLoveU Foundation partnered with the City of Escondido’s Public Works staff and the Volunteer Escondido program to help beautify Washington Park by picking up trash, trimming up landscaping, spreading out playground chips, and painting the restroom building.
About the Event
Sunday, June 27, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., the volunteers were part of WeLoveU’s 2021 Clean World Movement in the United States: Eliminating Waste Accumulated from COVID-19. Volunteers picked up trash and debris, spread out landscape mulch and painted the building and inside the bathrooms.
A total of 79 members did the clean up and an additional four members cooked lunch and provided child care for the members at the park. WeLoveU is planning cleanups between June and July across America to restore various ecosystems that have been neglected and damaged due to COVID-19. WeLoveU is making efforts to revive and brighten their communities coming out of the pandemic through the cleanup.
“We’re doing this united effort to clean up waste and debris accumulated during the pandemic. While the air pollution decreased during COVID, household waste increased, there is a lot more litter and pollution on land and in public places” said one of the volunteers. “We’re hopeful that through these cleanups, we can enhance the livelihood of our communities and that our neighbors and peers can feel encouraged to join us in the movement to restore our ecosystems across America to combat climate change.”
Keep America Beautiful reported that 24 billion pieces of litter were on the side of highways and 26 billion pieces of litter along the waterways in 2020.
Different factors have added to the rise in pollution and litter during the pandemic such as: an increase in single-use plastics and PPE, shipping materials as online shopping became more prevalent, plastic food packaging, and so on. More residential garbage overflowed in neighborhoods and major cities, causing trash to oftentimes blow away and become litter and debris. Social distancing restrictions also caused the cancelation of many environmental cleanups.
