Vera Wilson, 81, taught 34 years in Escondido schools

Vera Aileene Wilson, 81, of Valley Center, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 14, 2016, from complications of an auto accident.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Shattuck, Oklahoma, to Irven H. Crow and Clara M. Hanlon Crow during the Great Depression and in the heart of the Dust Bowl. She was raised on the family farm with her siblings, Duane and Delores.

She graduated with the class of 1952 from Arnett High School. She excelled in academics and, unbeknownst to her, her superintendent and principal enrolled her in Northwestern Oklahoma State University. She worked three jobs in college to pay for her room and board, tuition, and spending money. She graduated with a degree in business education.

While attending college she met and fell in love with Lyle Wilson of Alva, Oklahoma.

After graduating in 1956, they married and enjoyed 43 years of marriage. Vera and Lyle enjoyed camping and traveling. They met her brother and sister many times in Colorado to camp.

Mrs. Wilson loved teaching and taught for 34 plus years. She was voted teacher of the year three times and retired in 1993 from the Escondido School District.

Mrs. Wilson was a very active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Organization. She was also a member of P.E.O, Valley Center (a philanthropic organization that reaches out to women), for ten years. She served as president in 2015.

Mrs. Wilson’s passion was her love of Jesus Christ. She was an active member of Valley Center Community Church, initiating a ministry called Solo Flight, for those in a solo position in life. She was also a leading member of Praise and Prayer, holding the church and community up in prayer each week for over 15 years.

Traveling the world was also her delight. Mrs. Wilson died while on the second of four trips scheduled with special friend, Dean Ward, also of Valley Center.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Lyle Wilson, parents, Irven Crow and Clara Hanlon Crow, brother, Duane Crow, and sister, Delores Thompson. Survivors include nephew Ronnie Crow of Vici, Oklahoma and niece Connie Thomsen of Taloga, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 20, 2016, 2 p.m., at Valley Center Community Church (29105 Valley Center Rd., Valley Center, CA 92082).
