Vendor space sold out for Tamale festival

The 3rd annual Escondido Tamale Festival ( is a free community event presented by the Escondido Downtown Business Association, on Saturday November 11, 11 a.m.– 5 p.m.  in Grape Day park.

Organizer Alex MacLachlan tells The Times-Advocate that vendor space is sold out. “We are requesting contestants for the Salsa dance contest sponsored by Arthur Murray Dance School, and Chihuahua costume contest / fashion show, sponsored by Kahoots. Just show up and sign up at the Will Call booth near the beer and wine garden.”


A VIP Tamale Package is also available including Tamale Plate:  2 Tamales, Rice, Beans, Salsa, Agua Fresca, 5-Tab Beer/Wine Wristband, VIP Event Bag, Tamale Making Class (for the 1st 100 VIP’s), 1 Raffle Ticket, Bottle of Water, Exclusive VIP seating area.

VIP Tix $40 Pre-purchased/$45 Day of event,  designated driver $30/$35, Veteran Discount $5 Off.

They have introduced a $5 discount for Veteran VIP tickets ($35) for which you get a tamale combination lunch, tamale making class by title sponsor, Northgate Markets, a five-drink wristband at the event Beer and Wine Garden, event bag with swag, backstage seating, and raffle tickets for a chance to win one of many prizes donated by local businesses totaling over $2,000.


See who will win the “Best Tamale Contest”, with special guest judges.  Chihuahua Costume Contest and Fashion Show with prizes from Kahoots Pet Store!  Amateur Salsa Dance Contest with 1st place prize from Arthur Murray Dance Studio.

“We are also excited to see who wins this year’s Best Tamale contest. These vendors are very competitive, with Coop’s BBQ and La Luz del Mundo, last year’s 2nd and 3rd place finishers, trying to unseat back-to-back champion, El Tejate restaurant of Escondido,” said MacLachlan.

Judges, James Montejano (Seaside Market), Jesse Paul (Wooden Spoon), Shane Dustin (Hilton Hotels), and chef Robert Reid III will have their hands and taste buds full with these and other new contestants. Winners will be announced at 1 p.m.

The Escondido Tamale Festival is a celebration of Tamales and all the great Latin foods that have become iconic staples of California’s culture.  It’s a look back at the history of the Spanish and Mexican settlers who have influenced and contributed to our multicultural community, and a show of appreciation for the traditions, which have so positively affected Escondido.  Come to Escondido in North San Diego County for some traditional fun and The Best Tamales in Southern California.

The Escondido Tamale Festival is presented by the Escondido Downtown Business Association, a 501(c)6,  for the marketing, support, and preservation of the 127 year Old Historic Downtown Business District.
