VC bands take top honors at Coronado competition

High school and middle school band students celebrate their ever growing collection of competition awards last week.

The Valley Center High School and Middle School Jazz Bands competed in the biggest jazz festival of the year in San Diego May 9 in Coronado and took away several top prizes.

Twenty-eight high school and middle school jazz bands competed from as far away as Los Angeles and Palm Desert. VCHS took second place out of 20 high school groups ranking above jazz bands from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Del Norte etc.

Valley Center Middle School (VCMS) took 1st place out of eight middle school jazz bands ranking above its biggest competitor from Palm Desert Middle School. Brendan Beck of VCMS was awarded the Overall Middle School Outstanding Soloist Award out of over 60 other soloists competing for this honor. These awardwinning jazz bands will be performing at Bates Nut Farm on the afternoon of Saturday, June 6 as part of the upcoming 4th annual MusicFest and Kansas City Barbecue Cook-off fundraiser benefiting VC music programs.

Two weeks ago, the VCHS Bands and Choirs (representatives pictured) competed in San Francisco, winning multiple awards: first place awards in: Concert Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, Women’s Choir, Advanced Choir, and Jazz Choir. Jordan Beck earned a soloist award for trumpet; Sydney Park and Antonio Flores earned Accom- panist Awards; and the top Vocalist Award went to Alyda Montano. The VC groups walked away with overall Best Band out of all divisions for its Concert Band performance and overall Best Choir out of all divisions for its Jazz Choir performance!
