Quilt Guild

The El Camino Quilt Guild meets at 9:30 a.m. Thursday September 14 at its NEW location – First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside –  2001 S El Camino Real, Oceanside. Doors open at 9 a.m.

Speaker is Susan Carlson. susancarlson.com.   Her presentation will show the progression of her quilts to the present day, with insights and stories for each. The step-by-step development of a piece is shown, from the original inspiration to the finished wall hanging. She will share techniques and hints for design, fabric selection, construction, borders, and quilting. She will have quilts displayed in addition to her slide show.

At the workshop on Friday Sept. 15 you will learn her fabric collage method.

Neighborhood Leadership Training:

The City is offering a free Neighborhood Leadership Training course to Escondido residents. Classes will be held on Mondays, from September 1, through October 30, from 6 – 8 p.m. The Neighborhood Leadership Training program offers opportunities for participants to build and strengthen leadership skills, provides networking and skill which can assist in building stronger communities. Escondido Democratic Club 

Escondido City Councilmember Olga Diaz will give an update on possible plans to privatize the Escondido Public Library at the August 12 meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club. New guests are welcome to attend. Networking starts at 10 a.m. followed by formal meeting at 10:30 a.m. The club will meet at Park Avenue Community Center, 210 E. Park Ave., Escondido. Home firearm safety/ basic handgun class

A monthly 3-hour familiarization and safety gun class is offered for anyone anticipating the purchase of, or who already own, a handgun.

The class is offered Sunday, August 13, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Escondido Fish and Game Association shooting range east of Lake Wohlford. Participants learn the basics of handguns, home firearm safety and responsibility of firearm ownership. Handguns and ammunition are provided for the class but participants are encouraged to bring their own handgun if they already own one.

The Escondido Fish and Game Association range is located at 16525 Guejito Rd. and Lake Wohlford Road. Cost is $60. To register for the class call Jack at 760-746-2868.


2nd Tuesday Book Club 

Escondido Public Library invites adult readers to join the 2nd Tuesday Book Club meeting on August 8, at 6 p.m. in the Turrentine Room. This month’s selection is “The Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah. Copies of the book are available for check out and may be reserved in the Library catalog at library.escondido.org.

Lecture on Climate issues

Eve Simmons will present a free presentation August 5, 1 p.m. entitled “Hard realities and pragmatic optimism” at the Escondido Public Library upstairs at the Turrentine Room.

Join the group for Simmons, an environmental advocate, former photojournalist and wildlife guide. According to the publicity for the lecture, “Sourcing the world’s top experts, Eve brings awareness, humor and hope to the climate challenges we face and explores the many solutions at hand.”

Simmons has lectured through Southern California on the environment policies and practices, habitat and species loss, the Greenhouse Effect/Global Warming and our oceans for nearly 30 years.
