Hoop Shoot competition Saturday
Local competition for the 37th Annual Elks “Hoop Shoot,” the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8 through 13, will be held at Escondido Charter High School on Saturday, December 17 from 9 a.m. – noon.
Over three million youngsters from throughout the country entered last year’s competition for boys and girls in age categories 8-9; 10-11; and 12- 13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals in Chicago.
Local winners will compete against other contestants in the district event. Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National “Hoop Shoot” plaque, on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hear Brazilian style jazz at library
Escondido Public Library’s 2nd Saturday Concert Series welcomes the New Year with the Peter Sprague Trio performing Brazilian-style jazz on Saturday, January 14 at 3 p.m. in the Turrentine Room.
The trio features virtuoso guitarist Peter Sprague, singer and percussionist Leonard Patton, and accomplished saxophonist Tripp Sprague. Influenced by Latin jazz pioneers such as Chick Corea and Sergio Mendes, the group has combined their deep love of Brazilian music, American pop, and jazz to create a sound and style uniquely their own.
The February 11 concert will present the return of San Diego Opera’s “Opera Exposed!” with Dr. Nicholas Reveles and a talented group of soloists. Escondido Republican Club to meet December 19
The City of Escondido’s Fire Chief, Russ Knowles, will be ‘The Escondido Republican Club’s’ (TERC) guest speaker for their monthly lunchtime meeting on Monday, December 19.
The meeting will be held at the Cocina del Charro Restaurant located at 890 West Valley Parkway, Escondido. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. with the buffet luncheon service starting at 11:45 a.m. The meeting begins promptly at noon and concludes at 1 p.m.
A reservation is necessary. The cost is $14 per person.
