Escondido Public Library’s Teen Burritos & Book Club, for ages 13 to 18 years, meets on Thursday, March 26, in the Turrentine Room from 4–5:30 p.m. Butter, by Erin Jade Lange, will be discussed and complimentary burritos will be provided. A limited number of copies of Butter are currently available for checkout at the Library’s Information Desk.
Butter focuses on the life of a lonely and obese high school student, nicknamed “Butter.” Bullied by his fellow students, Butter struggles with his self-esteem and finds it difficult to deal with everyday life. Feeling he can’t face another day, Butter announces that he will eat himself to death and invites everyone to watch, live on the internet. This announcement gives Butter the type of attention he has never experienced and it makes his decision about whether to go through with his plan a daunting one. Lange’s moving portrayal of Butter allows a glimpse into the life of one teen on the verge of a life-changing decision.
In addition to discussing Butter, there will be time for teens to share their opinions and ideas about other books they have enjoyed and propose titles for the next meeting. Titles will be voted on by all participants and the selected book will be discussed at the Burritos and Book Club Meeting on Thursday, May 21.
All participants receive a free book or audiobook at the end of the program. Cathy Janovitz, Escondido Public Library’s teen librarian commented, “Burritos and Book Club encourages reading and provides a forum for teens to relate their opinions, feelings, and insights about the stories. It’s a casual environment where they can feel comfortable about sharing their views about any topic that interests them.”
