QUILTERS’ ASSOCIATION MAY MEETING

North County Quilters’ Association’s next meeting features Guest Speaker Trudy Cleveland, who will share “Modernizing your Quilt Toolbox.”  The meeting is May 20, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1087 W Country Club Lane, Escondido.  Doors open at 5:45 p.m.  Free parking is available on-site.  Free admission for first time guests.  Regular admission is $5/meeting or $30/annual membership.

In addition to the guest speaker, the meeting will include the White Elephant Boutique (Open for Shoppers at 5:45 p.m.), Guild Business updates, and lots of opportunities to bring home some special goodies: mini quilt raffle, block of the month raffle, fat quarters contest, door prizes.

DEMOCRATS TO MEET

The Escondido Democratic Club will next meet Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m.—noon. Due to repairs being done at the Park Avenue Community Center, the club has had to move this meeting to the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, 720 North Broadway, Escondido.

The membership meeting will hear from two guest speakers: Juan Vargas, a representative from North County Immigration Task Force, who will update the on efforts to help local immigrant families. Jan Messali, a volunteer with San Diego Rapid Response Network will talk about refugees seeking asylum at our border and what they encounter. 

Donations will also be accepted for refugees in need:

SOCKS: New, in packaging – men, women, & children

SHOELACES: (longest length should be 45”) are needed at the refugee shelter. Most families wearing sneakers have had laces removed during detention.  

UNDERWEAR: New, still in the packaging. 

Children: all sizes 

Women: size small and medium

FOUNDATION FOR SENIOR WELLBEING

Tribute to Traditions: A Celebration of Seniors in North County  

On Friday, May 31 the Foundation for Senior Wellbeing will celebrate traditions, honor the region’s heritage and recognize community leaders at a garden party. Three North County awardees will be honored in the categories of Volunteer of the Year, Exemplary Senior and Senior Community Advocate. This benefit event includes food, beer and wine, music, an opportunity drawing, a silent auction, and a photo booth. “Tribute to Traditions” begins at 5:30 p.m. and presentations start at 6:30 p.m. at San Marcos Historical Society’s Heritage Park located at 1952 Sycamore Drive, San Marcos. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 per couple. Funds raised support the Information Resource Center in North County, the Senior Crisis Fund and a Senior Emergency Preparedness program.
