Sewage spill in south Escondido

Just before 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning (10/15/17) there was a sewer spill in the Westfield Mall Parking lot adjacent to Interstate 15 in south Escondido. City of Escondido staff responded and secured the broken line and a nearby pump station. The spill condition ended just before 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health, Regional Water Quality Control Board, and State Office of Emergency Services were notified and mobilized to the scene. With the help of City of San Diego wastewater collection crews, the City of Escondido wastewater collection crew was able to clean the area by 4:00 p.m.

The spilled water reached the storm drain system that goes to Lake Hodges. Based on preliminary estimates the spill volume was up to 60,000 gallons. City of Escondido staff did not observe flow entering the lake from the storm drain system. However staff will continue to collect samples in the vicinity over the next few days to verify whether there has been a discharge to the lake. There is no concern at this time for residential or commercial water users.
