Once the water temperatures cool down a little, the Winter Trout Season will be jumping at local San Diego County lakes, from Lake Cuyamaca to Palomar Mountain’s Doane Pond. Escondido’s two lakes, Dixon and Wolhford, are no exceptions, and are expected to produce some big fish.
Greg Gould, Lake & Open Space Supervisor for the City of Escondido, will be the guest speaker at the November 8 meeting of the Senior Anglers of Escondido. He’ll talk about the planned trout stockings and supplying hatchery, the annual Trout Derby, senior discount days, and improvements at Dixon Lake including a new, state of the art playground.
Club members are looking forward to again serving as the official weigh masters for the city’s annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby scheduled for November 29 – December 1. Surprise catches of big fish will have the leader’s board changing throughout each day. The city gives prizes for the overall derby winners as well as daily winners in several categories. Also planted are 15 specially tagged fish for a $25 tackle gift card.
The club’s annual Club’s monthly trout tournaments at local lakes will start in December and run through April.
The club’s meetings are held the second Friday of each month, open to all anglers age 50 and above, at the Park Avenue Community Center, 210 Park Ave., Escondido. Meetings start at 9:30 a.m.
Members of the club enjoy freshwater fishing challenges, summer saltwater charters, surf fishing tournaments, RV camping trips, picnics, and community service to help kids go fishing.
