Scrabble-Thon will gather word whizzes

The Escondido Public Library and the Friends of Literacy Services will host the 12th Annual Scrabble-Thon Tournament & Fundraiser on Saturday, March 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will be held in the auditorium of the Park Avenue Community Center at 210 Park Ave., Escondido. Doors open for player check-in at 8:30 a.m. and tournament play begins at 9 a.m. Players must preregister by March 7 online at library.escondido.org/ scrabblethon, by mail, or in person at the Literacy Services office on the second floor of the library. The registration fee for adults is $25 and $15 for high school students.

The Scrabble® tournament consists of five 30-minute games and is open to adults and high school students. Players sign up to play in one of three divisions: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced.

Participants can compete individually or as a part of a four-player team. Team play requires that all four teammates compete within the same division. Players compete for prizes at the end of each game as well as the final awards for highest individual, team, and high school scores.

Scrabble-Thon raises funds to benefit the Library’s Literacy Services program. Sponsored by the Friends of Literacy Services, a nonprofit Library support group, 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to provide literacy materials and resources.

There will be opportunity drawings, a Pick-a-Tile game, and silent auction items throughout Scrabble-Thon. Opportunity drawing tickets will be on sale at the library before March 12 and at the event. Donations are tax-deductible.

“Our 12th annual Scrabble-Thon promises to be a fun-filled event for avid Scrabble® enthusiasts and novice players,” said Literacy Services Librarian,

Lalitha Nataraj.“You definitely don’t have to be an expert to play, and we welcome local players from all around Southern California,” she added. “Participants will be thrilled to know that all proceeds go toward helping adults improve their reading and writing skills to better their quality of life.”

Escondido Public Library is located at 239 S. Kalmia St. in Escondido. For more information on Scrabble-Thon and library services, contact Nataraj at 760-839-4219 or visit library.escondido.org.
