Sarah “Sally” Miller Martin, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 86, passed away in Pleasanton, on Thursday May 11, 2017 with her family near her side. She was born on January 31, 1931 in DeKalb, Illinois to Ralph Guvine and Ethel Belle (Langholf) Miller of Rochelle. She married Robert “Bob” Paul Martin on July 20, 1951 at Seward Congregational Church.
Sally Martin attended Rochelle Township and Winnebago high schools. She continued her education at Rockford Memorial Hospital, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked at the Americana Nursing Home in Rochelle for many years, later joining private practice before moving with her family to Escondido in 1977.
She changed professions and worked for Judd Wire until retirement. It was then that she and Bob moved to Cottonwood, Arizona and later Yerington, Nevada. Mrs. Martin was a prolific reader, enjoyed bowling, and an avid sports enthusiast. Her abundant love and generosity to family and friends became her legacy.
Mrs. Martin is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons: Jay Robert and Todd James, and two grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Ann Milligan of Kings, Illinois; eight children: Ruth (Carey Griffin) of Little Rock, Arkansas; Bradley (Bernardita) of Pleasanton, David of Vista, Steven of Carrizozo, New Mexico, Sara (John Lujan) of Litchfield Park, Arizona; Jeff (Lea) of Escondido; Elizabeth (Noel Ballecer) of Livermore; Joel of Little Rock; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Her family held a private memorial at Callaghan Mortuary on May 12 and she will be laid to rest at Lawnridge Cemetery in Rochelle, Illinois. All memorial donations will be sent to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
