Rainbow trout planting coming January 3

Trout fishing has been excellent at Lake Wohlford. Jeremy Cominlag of San Diego has big fish honors with his 8.40 pound trout caught in Willow Cove on a green power-worm. Other notable catches included; Selvin’s 7.10 pound, Chris Sy’s 6.70 pound, and Keith Greetis’s 5.40 pound.

Fishing has been best on the east end and in the southern cove opposite the boat dock. Inflated night-crawlers, and power-worm / power-bait combinations, have been what is working.

Park hours: 6 a.m. – 5: p.m. (open seven days a week); dock closes: 4:30 p.m.

Last Plant:  1,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Wednesday December 18.

Next Plant:  1,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Friday January 3.

Water temperature: At surface 51.62 f., 9.93 D.O. @ 10’ 52.52 f., 9.65 D.O.

Water level:  Low level, private water craft are currently banned.

Permit and Boat Rentals are sold at the Ranger Station. Rangers do not sell fishing licenses so anglers must acquire them elsewhere prior to their visit. Motor boats are discounted to $20 for seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for active military every Saturday.

Due to the threat of Quagga mussels, there is a ban on private water craft and equipment. Restricted equipment includes; private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

The bass bite has been extremely sluggish. Largemouth Bass can be found around structure. With the re-introduction of trout to the menu this an excellent time to be throwing swimbaits in hopes of catching a big bass.

Catfish continue to be caught throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver.

The new crappie float is the place for catching crappie. Crappie are most often caught on finger jigs or live golden shiners.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.

Why don’t area lakes have fishing pears for the handicap, lake Hodges has one sitting 50 yards out in the water
