North Broadway Elementary awarded “Innovation Award”

North Broadway Elementary School was recently awarded a $3,400 grant through the Escondido Education Foundation’s Innovation awards program.

Here are some highlights of this program:

The entire North Broadway school community came together around the shared experience of reading the same book, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” by Kate DiCamillo.  Each family received the book and followed the same reading schedule during the months of May and June.

The school expanded its community by engaging local firefighters, the police chief, school personnel, military professionals and volunteer coordinators as video recorded readers. These videos were posted to special link on the school website, allowing families to watch chapters read each evening.

The school’s technology coach created a web site showcasing the many featured readers, allowing families to read aloud at home, but also to listen to other community members reading aloud.

The school’s Parent Liaison facilitated the reading of a Spanish version of the book so that Spanish-speaking parents could more fully participate in the experience.

They added book related activities to the Family Art Night and the Parent Liaison planned an after school stuffed rabbit activity so that children could make their own “Edward Tulane.”

They rented an official Edward Tulane doll from the publisher.  “Edward” visited many classrooms and helped students become even more engaged in their reading.

A book related “Question of the Week” was created by the school Librarian.  Each week they posted the student responses and selected the most creative and well-supported answers.

The school ended the project by purchasing an entire collection of books written by our featured author, Kate DiCamillio.

“Our families and students are hooked on family read aloud time and we want to keep them going!” said a spokesman for the school.

An outstanding success story ! Students at North Broadway School are fortunate to spend classroom time on such innovative assignment as this class’ shared reading project. Plus the project provided opportunity for students to learn specialized media skills, and then have completed audio taped segments shared with parents. The taped audio segments of students reading the assigned book aloud were shared in two languages (English and Spanish) to maximize community outreach and promote parent participation. Compliments to all. For developing such an impressive, and multi-value classroom assignment, it makes me wonder if the $3,400 grant from EUSD is enough? Nice work at North Broadway School !!
