Retired Escondido Police Captain Mark Ippolito died on Friday, August 12, from a prolonged illness. He was a big part of the Escondido Police Department history, serving for 30 years.

Capt. Ippolito, 80 was at the Murrieta Health and Rehabilitation Center in Murrieta, and was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. A memorial service was held Saturday, August 27 in Escondido.

Born and raised in Brockton, Mass., the son of Anthony and Lillian (Harvey) Ippolito, Capt. Ippolito he was a longtime resident of Escondido.

In his early years, Mr. Ippolito was a standout athlete at Brockton High School. After graduating from Brockton High School in 1955, he joined the United States Army serving as a Military Police Officer until 1958. He joined the Escondido Police Department in 1958, serving until 1990, finally retiring as a captain. He met his wife, Dorothy May (Clark) Ippolito and they were married in 1969.

After settling in Escondido, Mr. Ippolito became committed to law enforcement and was an integral part of the professional organization that the Escondido Police Department is today. He not only took pride in the police department, but truly relished the friends he made during his time all over the city.

Mr Ippolito was a longtime member of the Escondido Kiwanis Club, and was known for his friendliness and quiet nature. Mr Ippolito was an avid golfer, Cribbage player, and painter, but mostly, he enjoyed his time with his family.

He was survived by his grandson, David Paradise, his son Tom Ippolito, and his wife Jodi, grandchildren Anne Marie and Georgia, his son Todd Ippolito and his wife Kristina, grand children Kurt and Ryan; his daughter, Maureen (Ippolito) Breece; and her husband Duane, his grandson Dylan; his brothers Robert Ippolito of Vista, Wayne Ippolito of South Carolina, Bill Ippolito of Massachusetts and a sister Jacqueline (Ippolito) Voss of Massachusetts; five grandchildren; and many close friends. He always fondly remembered his deceased sister Joyce Ippolito.

He maintained a special place in his heart for his niece Karen Schmid, and her husband John, and their children Joel, Elizabeth, Andrew, and Bethany and for his nephew Duane Voss, his wife Kimberly, and their children, Shane, Jenna, and Julia.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 27, at Escondido First Church of the Nazarene, 1555 S. Redwood, Escondido.

    Officer Ippolito was my hero when I was a young boy , he was a good man and I miss him.
