On June 1, at about 1:07 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies from the Valley Center Substation learned a man was shot in the leg near the 15000 block of Highway 76 and taken to the Pala Fire Station.
The victim met the suspect in Temecula and gave him a ride to Valley Center, where the shooting occurred. The suspect ordered the victim to pull off the road and when the victim complied, the suspect produced a handgun the victim tried to take away. The victim ran, but the suspect shot him in the leg and drove off in his vehicle. It was recovered nearby.
Valley Center Sheriff’s Detectives investigated and identified the suspect as 23 year-old Ryan Sergio Ballew.
On June 4, at 2:38 p.m., a Valley Center Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a vehicle near the entrance to the Pauma Indian Reservation, recognized Ryan Ballew in the back seat trying to hide, and arrested him with the help of other deputies and Pauma Tribal Police officers. The alleged carjacker was booked into Vista Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and carjacking.
