Long waits likely for non-emergencies at PMC

With the spike in new coronavirus cases over the weekend, expect long delays for non-life-threatening cases at Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center.

San Diego County was breaking previous records on new coronavirus cases earlier this week. On Saturday, 17,507 new cases were reported according to the County Health Department, and 19,009 on Friday.

According to Palomar Health spokesman Derryl Acosta, “We are the busiest or second busiest emergency department in the County and top 10 in the state. We are always busy.”

However, said Acosta, “In the past couple of weeks operations has been affected by staff calling in sick, requiring the repositioning of staff from other areas of the hospital to provide coverage. We are managing and have the necessary resources to continue providing high quality care. However, long waits are likely for not life threatening care.”

Acosta added, “We are asking people to come if they have an emergency. Please do not come for testing.”
