Escondido, CA

Local resident to be honored for her fundraising efforts

Jeanne E. Schmelzer

Escondido resident Jeanne E. Schmelzer was recently recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals as Outstanding Development Professional and will be honored at National Philanthropy Day on November 14.

A dedicated, congenial, unassuming yet dynamic development professional, Jeanne Schmelzer’s leadership in AFP and throughout the community has been transformative, sometimes in subtle and inconspicuous ways.

For the past 20 years she has devoted between 10 and 40 hours weekly to leadership and teamwork in AFP and Rotary (Downtown Club 33), serving on an AFP Board since 1997.

She offers honest, straightforward guidance to new and seasoned professionals–including other consultants, who frequently call her seeking advice in handling challenges they are facing.

Through her leadership, the San Diego chapter of AFP initiated workshops in addition to luncheons, to create more time for hands-on learning and networking, in response to member feedback requesting both more formal and informal education.

Schmelzer has led CFRE trainings offered through AFP chapters in San Diego, Silicon Valley, and Palm Springs. She was a UCSD faculty member, teaching a range of philanthropy coursework that was part of the Fundraising Certification Course. She also earned a certification as a Trainer of Trainers through the Association of Development Professionals, serving YMCA development professionals.

Schmelzer’s commitment to helping development professionals through philanthropy will be honored on National Philanthropy Day. Please let me know if you’d be interested in profiling her and I will coordinate the details for you.

The awards event will be held at the annual National Philanthropy Day event at the Del Mar Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (

The annual celebration honors the dedication, leadership and community contributions of San Diego County’s philanthropists, volunteers, professionals and organizations. This year San Diego was named the #1 most philanthropic city in the nation (Charity Navigator Survey, June 2017).

This year’s presenting sponsor is the University of California San Diego.

Proceeds go toward supporting the next generation of development professionals with scholarships and monthly educational workshops, which provide pathways to improve outcomes in the San Diego region.

“National Philanthropy Day recognizes and celebrates the critical role philanthropy plays to position San Diego as both America’s finest city and America’s kindest region,” said Neville Billimoria, Honorary Committee Chairman of the event.
