Local candidate keeps hat in ring

Escondido resident and RN Mari Barosay, who says she is still a candidate to unseat Darrell Issa, although she is no longer living in his district.

Mari Barosay, the Escondido RN who announced she was running for Congress in the 50th District earlier in 2021, is still running for Congress after redistricting. Even though she will no longer be in the district of the politician she is targeting: Darrell Issa.

Issa’s district, now dubbed the 48th, includes part of Escondido, with other parts of the city included in the new 50th, which will be represented by Scott Peters, who currently represents the 52nd District.

Barosay, a Democrat, told The Times-Advocate, “Just to let you know, I’m still running to unseat Issa.  Redistricting has placed where I live in the 50th, but Issa jumped to the 48th to run. I’m gonna give him a run for his money.”

Technically speaking, Issa didn’t “jump” anywhere since district boundaries were created by the Independent Redistricting Commission.

Barosay points out that she can run in Issa’s district even though she doesn’t live in it. “You can live anywhere in the state. It’s not a requirement,” she said. “That’s why I’m going to get in his way. I don’t want him to run unopposed as with Marjorie Taylor Greene.”

That is NOT true of state assembly and senate districts, which state law requires be represented by residents.
