Letter to the Editor: SUPPORT FOR 2020 BALLOT MEASURE – SAFEGUARD OUR SAN DIEGO COUNTRYSIDE, SOS INITIATIVE

Editor, Times-Advocate:

In 2020, San Diego voters will have new choice to accept or reject extreme high-density development of sprawl projects, and avoid future risks of dense homes in very high severity fire hazard zones (recently mapped by CalFire and SANDAG.)

In 2020, voters in San Diego will have pivotal opportunity to make informed choice to vote YES on Safeguard Our San Diego SOS Initiative as Ballot Measure on March 3, 2020 Primary Election cycle.

A YES vote on SOS Initiative gives VOTERS control over future land use decisions – to approve or reject future extreme general plan amendments (GPAs) for high density luxury home projects in San Diego’s sensitive rural back-country areas that propose careless sprawl development, based on inadequate piece-meal planning and inadequate mitigation and infrastructure.   Patterns indicate many overly dense GPA projects were approved that do not provide actual affordable housing, sufficient road improvements, infrastructure or emergency evacuation capability.

A YES vote on SOS Initiative will remove land use control from inept hands of SD County Supervisors, so voters can choose to reinforce current SD County General Plan (updated 2011), a consensus-based land use plan formed by stakeholders (residents, business leaders, building industry and environmental groups).  General Plan already designates ample urban areas for affordable housing, as approved by SD voters by wide margin of support.  Public support of SD General Plan was reaffirmed again in 2016, when SD voters rejected Proposition B by 66% (Lilac Hills Ranch).

In 2020, unless SOS Initiative is passed, future GPA proposals for extreme high-density sprawl projects will increase commutes, prolong travel time, increase traffic congestion and carbon emissions, destroy protected habitat, and exacerbate extreme fire risks.   Adverse project impacts will create expensive infrastructure deficiencies that taxpayers will be on the hook for, ‘left holding the bag’.

JOIN me and informed voters to support Safeguard Our San Diego Countryside SOS Initiative 2020 Ballot Measure, to achieve voter control on future land use planning, and apply evidence-based economic data and fire science to build a safer, sustainable San Diego.   Informed voters deserve a future system that allows voters to apply sound planning practices to reinforce SD General Plan that supports our local economy and quality of life.  Contrary to bogus claims by building industry, SOS Initiative does not stop construction of any housing, but instead encourages growth closer to urban areas served by public infrastructure.

Thank you Ms. Borchmann for doing such a great job of summarizing the most important reasons why we should all support the SOS Initiative.
