Letter to the Editor: HEALTH ISSUE SHOULD CONCERN EVERYONE

Editor, Times-Advocate:
I bought property in Escondido in 1976, it’s on Third Avenue, between Fig and Elm and the alley behind the property is between 2nd and 3rd. If you stand in the alley and look to the west all that alleyway has been redone and the same if you look to the east.
There is just one block of alleyway that has not been upgraded. The alley was far from new when I purchased the property 46 years ago. This means all the new sewer, gas and water mains are tied together with old corroded substandard pipes at the weakest link, my alley. When I have complained to the city in the past the story is always the same, we don’t have the money.
I have paid property taxes for 46 years and every person’s property that abuts that alley has been generating revenue for the City of Escondido for a very, very long time. When does the discrimination against our alley end? The pipes in the alley can leak contaminates into the city’s water system contaminating the new mains. This health issue should concern everyone. This oversight is deliberate, shortsighted and lacks intelligence. When does the city plan to address this situation?
LARRY DEPUY, Escondido
