Laura Eva Bodie Hoff

1927 – 2018, longtime Escondido resident

Laura Eva Hoff, nee Bodie, former resident of San Marcos and Escondido, San Diego, California, passed away at her home in Cedar Hills, Utah, Utah, on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at 12:08 a.m. of natural causes, two weeks away from her 91st birthday.

Mrs. Hoff was born in San Diego, on December 23, 1927 to Glenn Raymond and Eva E (Kirschenmann) Bodie. She spent her childhood in San Diego and Escondido. Her father was the caretaker of the Vailview Inn in Escondido where she had many adventures with her siblings. He also built a house with his own hands for his family in Escondido complete with an aviary, greenhouse, and fish pond—which Laura adored. She would sneak into the aviary and sit with all the little birdies, some escaping.

She had a little dog, a Boston terrier her father had bred named Bubbles she loved and would tell all her troubles to, as well as a calico cat Betsy.

Laura met and married Danny Hoff on  February 6, 1943, in Compton. He enlisted in the Army during WWII in 1943 and left for basic training. This took them to Florida, Oklahoma, Texas where their first daughter was born, and Japan.

After the war, they lived in Riverside, where their second daughter was born. They eventually moved back to Escondido until her father found a wonderful property and home for them in San Marcos, where their third daughter was eventually born. They were able to live out their dreams there on a small ranch which they built up. They shared many magical memories with family and the community.

They moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah, in 2006, when the property became too much for them to handle in their late years. There they made many new friends.

Mrs. Hoff loved to sew, to garden and was a creative, inventive artist. She had a knack of making children’s worlds magical, beautiful, and fun. She made everyone feel special and loved with her sweet, gentle, kind and compassionate soul, her cheerful, optimistic personality, and her idiosyncratic sense of humor.

She is survived by two of her daughters: Cynthia A. (Bob K.) Gardner, and Amanda J. (Jerry D.) Walker; 14 grandchildren: Larissa, Laleña, Airyana, Mandolyn, Zak, Jake, Chanel, Désirée, Chris, Lindsey, Seth, Matthew, Adelaide, and Natalie; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Daniel Ned Hoff, daughter and son-in-law, (Kitty) Laura Kathleen and Ronald Frank Graf, her parents, Glenn Raymond and Eva E (Kirschenmann) Bodie; her siblings, Quetin Calvin Bodie, Opal Effie Dickson, and Arleo June Murphy.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 13, 11 a.m.  at the Cedar Hills 13th Ward Chapel, 3950 West Cedar Hills Dr., Cedar Hills, Utah. Family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be at the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. We send special warm gratitude to Canyon Home Health and Hospice, Stonehenge of American Fork, and Tender Moments for all their superb and wonderful heartfelt love and care of mother these last years. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.warenski.com.
