The 3rd annual Valley Center Kiwanis Golf Tournament Friday, October 16 at Woods Valley Golf Course will raise money for scholarships for VC High School (VCHS) seniors and for character education and anti-bullying programs in the lower grades.

Tournament registration is at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Dinner is at 5 p.m. The $99 donation per person buys you greens fees, cart, balls and the after-tournament banquet with tri-tip as the main entrée. Cost for the dinner alone is $30 per person. The Kiwanis Club is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, and so all donations are tax deductible.

The Times Advocate sat down last week with co-chairmen Marty Burstein and Jim Dorschel. They noted that if you are not coming as part of a foursome you will be put in groups of similar abilities and handicaps.

There will be awards for closest to the pin and longest drive. The event will include a silent auction for donated prizes, with prizes including gift certificates, golf equipment and wine baskets. “We are still looking for donations of prizes,” said Dorschel, who added, “It’s really all about Valley Center’s children.”

Sponsors are also needed for each of the 18 holes of the tournament. Hole sponsors get a plaque and public recognition of their generosity and will be mentioned in a thank you ad the club plans to take out in the local newspaper.

“That’s one reason for doing it,” said Dorschel, “but the best reason is that you are doing something for your local community.”

Last year the Kiwanis gave out six scholarships to VCHS seniors and partially funded an anti-bullying program patterned on Rachel’s Challenge. Last year’s tournament raised $7,000. The goal this year is $10,000. Last year the tournament attracted 42 golfers. This year’s target is 60.

“It’s a great way to spend a nice afternoon in the fall, with a wonderful dinner. It’s like a walk in the woods!” said Burstein. “It’s going to be fun!”

If you want tickets, call Dorschel at 760-749-9664. Or mail to VC Kiwanis, P.O. Box 173, Valley Center CA 92082. Sponsors should make donations by October 1 if they want to have logos included on the sponsor signs.

The VC Kiwanis Club meets Fridays at 7 a.m. at Country Junction. Woods Valley Golf Club is located at 14616 Woods Valley Rd.
