Kit Carson’s Queen Califia damaged by vandal

The Niki de Saint Phalle  “Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Garden” is undergoing repairs after a vandal or vandals broke in sometime between Thursday and Tuesday and smashed more than a dozen tiles with an object, possibly a hammer.  Because it is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the second and fourth Saturdays the damages weren’t discovered until early this week. According to Teresa Collins of the City of Escondido, the sculpture feature at Kit Carson Park will be open during the regularly scheduled next Tuesday and Thursday (weather permitting.) Repairs are expected to take several weeks since a certain expertise is required to make them and only one local person knows how to do it.

Why haven’t cameras and other intruder detection systems, silent or not, been installed to help protect this treasure? The associated costs couldn’t exceed the multiple repair costs and aggravation caused by this ongoing problem.
