Jane Thomas Anderson Born 4-1-1929 Burlington, NC, Died 2-23-2023 Pauma Valley CA

Jane Thomas Anderson passed away peacefully on her journey to heaven on Thursday, February 23, 2023, aged 93.  

Jane was a resident of Pauma Valley, California, and a member of the Pauma Valley Golf Club.  Jane was also a former resident of San Luis Obispo, Mill Valley, and San Francisco, California; and Winter Haven, Florida. 

Jane was a North Carolina native who was raised in Salisbury.  Jane’s father, John Michael Thomas (Mike), was the resident golf pro at the Country Club of Salisbury from 1930 until his death in 1939.  Jane lived at the County Club of Salisbury during her early childhood with her dad, mother Betty Coble Thomas, older brother John Michael Thomas II (Mickey), and younger sister Kathleen. 

Jane was married to Dr. Robert Milton Anderson for over 50 years until his passing on December 16, 2020.

Jane graduated from (formerly) Boyden High School in Salisbury in 1947 and from Catawba College in 1951. 

Jane learned golf as a child from her father and later played golf on the Catawba men’s golf team, the only woman to play on a men’s collegiate team in America at that time. 

Jane graduated with honors from Catawba College in 1951 and was inducted into the Catawba Sports Hall of Fame on April 9, 1994.  Jane received her sports letter on the men’s golf team in1950-51. She was the only woman on the men’s golf team in the nation.  Jane received the Teague Award

as outstanding female athlete of both North & South Carolina, 1951.

Following college, Jane became a competitive women’s amateur golfer.  Jane won the 1961 Women’s San Francisco Open and the 1962 Oakland City Women’s Open, among other golf trophies. Jane later became a member of the prestigious San Francisco Golf Club in 1976.  

In 1949, Jane participated in the US Open.  She was a Quarterfinalist of National Amateur in1950, Runner-up N.C. Woman’s Golf Championship, 1950.  Three-time Country Club of Salisbury Champion, Florida Amateur Champion, 1952, Hawaii Ladies Golf Champion, 1958, San Francisco City Champion 1961, Oakland City Champion, 1961-62, San Luis Obispo (CA) Club Champion 1989-90, 1992, Pauma Valley (CA) Club Champion 1993.

Jane earned a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of South Florida in 1970.  She worked in the field of special education in Winter Haven, Florida and in the San Francisco School District for many years.

Jane taught special education and many other grades all over the United States, finishing her career at Pauma School as their first grade teacher.  Jane started the first children’ golf program at Pauma School for which she received a fifty thousand dollar federal grant.

During her retirement, Jane enjoyed teaching junior golf to young students at the Pauma Valley Country Club.

Jane is survived by her nephew John Thomas, niece Christy Thomas Howey, nephew John Michael Thomas, niece Terry Thomas Deaver and niece, Kathy Thomas Stenson.

A viewing will be on Friday, March 3, 2023, at McLoud Mortuary, 1919 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, CA, 92027, 3 PM to 7 PM.

The funeral Mass for Jane Thomas Anderson will be held on Saturday, March 4, at 10:00 AM at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, 31020 Cole Grade Rd., Valley Center, CA, 92082. 

A private reception will be held separately following the Mass service.

In lieu of flowers, if donating, there is a special fund being set up to honor Jane’s love of youth golf programs.  Details will be available at the service.
