An inebriated pedestrian who had apparently fallen asleep on Ash Street and was struck by a car died early Saturday morning from his injuries.
On October 8, at about 1:57 a.m. officers from the Escondido Police Department were dispatched to the area of 1161 E. Valley Parkway regarding a serious injury collision.
Escondido Fire paramedics were flagged down moments after the collision and were already on scene. Officers arrived and determined a single vehicle had struck a pedestrian on Ash just south of Valley Parkway.
Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene it appears a 24 year old male was driving south on Ash in a green 1996 Volkswagen Golf. His vehicle struck a pedestrian in the roadway and came to rest on top of the person.
It appears the individual was in a prone position in the roadway prior to the collision. Fire personnel used special equipment to lift the vehicle off of the pedestrian although the person died at the scene. Life saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful.
The male driver of the Golf was not injured and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the decedent as Jose W Torrez, 33.
The traffic investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Officer Mike Nelson of the Traffic Division. The police are seeking the public’s help with anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any additional information about the collision. Witnesses are encouraged to call Officer Nelson at 760-839-4407.
