A California Highway Patrol Officer encountered a single vehicle, single fatality collision on I-15 Southbound south of Via Rancho Parkway. The collision resulted in the closure of the Via Rancho Parkway on-ramp to I-15 Southbound.
On December 9, 2019 at approximately 5:59 AM a silver Nissan SUV was traveling southbound on I-15 within the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes. According to witnesses the vehicle suddenly turned to the right across all lanes. The vehicle crossed all four mainline traffic lanes and the Via Rancho Parkway on-ramp to I-15 Southbound, crossed the asphalt shoulder, and struck the guardrail adjacent to the on-ramp. The vehicle continued through the guardrail and stopped in the brush area beyond the shoulder.
Before California Highway Patrol Border Communications Center had received any calls regarding the collision, a CHP Officer who taking the Via Rancho Parkway ramp encountered the collision and immediately rendered medical aid. CHP Communications started Escondido Fire Department to assist.
Unfortunately, the driver of the Nissan, a 34-year-old man from Menifee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ramp was closed at approximately 7:10 AM until approximately 9:05 AM. The Del Lago HOV ramp was opened to all vehicles to alleviate traffic delays in the area.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor within this collision.
The incident remains under investigation.
