Palomar Medical Center last week opened Pod D, a 14-bed expansion to the Emergency Department bringing total emergency beds to 72. Pod D was built in existing shelled space adjacent to Pods A, B, C.
The shelled space was left so the hospital could grow with the community. Since the hospital opened in August 2012, annual emergency room visits have increased almost 70% from CY 2013 to CY 2018 (63,000 visitors in 2013; 107,000 visitors in 2018.)
The expansion cost $4.7 million. About $2 million came from fundraising through the Palomar Health Foundation. Major donors include: Rincon Band of Luiseño Indians ($300,000); the emergency room physicians group Vituity ($100,000); Palomar Health medical staff ($50,000); and Palomar Health patients John Forst and Don Belcher ($50,000) each.
