Escondido Police were alerted to a man carrying a rifle near Kit Carson Park at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. At about 1 p.m. a witness told police that a man had shot out a window in the 2200 block of Conway Drive, a short distance away from Rincon Middle School at 925 Lehner Ave.
Police later obtained a photo of the suspect and determined that he was carrying a pellet rifle.
Police contacted the Escondido Union School District and asked that four schools near the reported shooting be locked down.
The schools were Reidy Creek Elementary
School, North Broadway Elementary School, Rincon Middle School and Conway Elementary School.
Calvin Christian School, a private school, responded to the police order at 1:30 p.m. and locked down the facility. The lockdown was lifted at 2:10 p.m., school officials said.
“We heard that there was a person in the community suspected of having a possible gun and we acted immediately,” said Terry Kok, superintendent of Calvin Christian. “The lockdown went very well there was lots of cooperation among the parents, teachers and students.”
