Escondido Fire Department’s Captain Bill Atkins, a longtime resident of Valley Center, retired December 30, 2021 after finishing his last tour of duty on shift at Fire Station #6.
Captain Atkins served our community for 41 years. He began his career with the Escondido Fire Department as a Firefighter in July 1980. He was promoted to fire engineer in February 1990 and then to fire captain in March 2010.
Captain Atkins has been a leader and mentor during his career. He was a lead instructor at the EFD probationary firefighter academy, the coordinator of the Senior/Support Volunteer program for many years and he taught CPR to hundreds of city employees. Fire Chief Rick Vogt said, “Captain Atkins has always been known for his work ethic, positive attitude and enthusiasm. He always provided outstanding customer service, especially during very difficult situations and circumstances. While he will be missed, these traits will continue on through those Captain Atkins trained and mentored over the years.”
