It’s always a good idea to bring along a good appetite when you visit Farmer Boys. I went to the restaurant on 925 W Mission Ave. (there is another in Escondido on Valley Parkway) and met the shift manager, Rocio Hernandez, who told me about the new Happiest Hours menu and a seasonal favorite soup, the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl, served in a sourdough bowl.
The Happiest Hour menu, served 2–5 p.m. every day, includes Fried Zucchini, Onion Rings, a Double Bacon Cheeseburger, Chicken Tenders and Chili Cheese Fries. The prices are pretty happy to a $2 for the zukes, and onion rings, $3 for the tenders, $4 for the chili fries and Double Bacon Burger.
I’m something of a connoisseur of fried zucchini, and Farmer Boys’ variation on this theme is one of my favorite in the area. Long slices of zucchini deep fried and very hot and flavorful— when brought to your table. You could almost make a meal out of them.
You could definitely do that with the hearty clam chowder. This one might appeal to the pescatarians out there (those whose diets consist only of veggies and fish) since the chowder is not made with any meat products.
Hernandez told me that the Mission store will be undergoing a renovation starting February 5. Only the drive-through will be open for about a week while they update the restaurant, which first opened 20 years ago.
