On Wednesday about 6:20 a.m. California Highway Patrol Border Communications Center received a report of a pedestrian down on the right shoulder of SR-78 Westbound under the Rock Springs Road overcrossing.
Upon arrival Escondido Fire Department and CHP located a 26 year old female from Escondido on the right shoulder. The female had been struck by a vehicle and was deceased. The circumstances regarding how and why she was on the freeway are still under investigation. The vehicle left the scene after striking the pedestrian. Physical evidence located at the scene provided information regarding the vehicle that struck the pedestrian.
The suspect vehicle is identified as a 2017 to 2018 Mercedes Benz E-Class sedan green in color. The vehicle will have damage to the right front fender and wheel well.
Hwy-78 Westbound was affected by lane closures from the time of the collision until approximately 8:50 a.m.
The CHP continues to investigate this incident and is requesting the assistance of the public to locate the hit and run driver and vehicle.
