Escondido event to take a knee for racial justice

City leaders, the police chief and interfaith leaders will join community residents to demonstrate commitment to racial justice and community unity in Escondido.

Wednesday, June 3, noon- 12:30 p.m., at Escondido City Hall, there will be a peaceful, silent gathering in remembrance of the death of George Floyd.

Leaders expected at the peaceful demonstration include Mayor Paul McNamara, Deputy Mayor Consuelo Martinez, Council member Olga Diaz, Council member Mike Morasco, Escondido Police Chief Varso, Yusef Miller of Racial Justice Coalition San Diego, Rev. Meg Decker of Escondido Together and other leaders and community members in a peaceful event at city hall.

According to the organizers, “We will take a knee in a period of silence to honor Mr. Floyd’s life and to re-commit ourselves to racial justice and community unity. A bell will toll nine times in remembrance. The event will be held at noon on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 on the City Hall Plaza, 201 N. Broadway, Escondido. Demonstrators will be wearing masks and will kneel 6 feet apart. Speakers will offer reflections and statements at the event.”

    I am upset you are fanning the flames of racism by this democrat knee B.S. The cop killing was wrong horrible. We need to unite EVERYONE! I am a legal immigrants child and He worked hard to make it here. I love diversity what I hate is dividing of us. . We are all important ALL….Stop the division. Disgusted and disappointed. I am a proud Latina , I just moved to north county … are you brain washed?? STOP UNITE US ALL STOP YOUR HATE DIVISION do nothing knee bending?     To kneel is to show respect. If you choose not to participate, that is your right. I am sorry I didn’t see this sooner so didn’t attend. Thank you Escondido mayor, city council, police and everyone who works to pull us together at this difficult time.
