Escondido Appoints New Asst. City Manager



Escondido City Manager Graham Mitchell announced today that Jay Petrek, current Director of Community Development, has been appointed as the Assistant City Manager effective March 27, 2016.

Mr. Petrek has been employed by the City of Escondido since 1984.  He currently serves as the Director of Community Development, a position he has held since October 2015. Prior to that he has held the positions of Assistant Planning Director and Principal Planner. During his long tenure, Jay has overseen numerous projects including the development of three General Plan updates, the Downtown Specific Plan update, Climate Action Plan, large annexations, and several master plan communities.

Mr. Petrek holds a Bachelor of Science degree from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  He is also a member of the San Marcos Unified School District Board of Trustees, which serves portions of Escondido.

In making the announcement City Manager Graham Mitchell noted, “Jay knows and loves our community.  As the author of the City’s General Plan and work on various specific plans, he has attended over seventy community meetings, getting to know the residents, businesses and culture of Escondido.  Also, I believe that Jay will be a tremendous asset in overseeing the completion of the thirty major development projects that are under construction or in the planning pipeline.”    

Mr. Petrek’s salary will be $164,390.
