Rich Watkins, currently principal at Escondido High School, has accepted the position of Director of Pupil Services & Intervention starting July 1, 2017 in the Escondido Union High School District.
Watkins has a rich history in Escondido and in the Escondido Union High School District. He has worked in the Escondido Union High School District for the past 27 years, serving as a teacher in Science, Physical Education and Health. Having taught at Escondido, Orange Glen and San Pasqual High Schools, Watkins was also one of the original staff members to help with the opening of Valley Center High School.
Watkins then moved into administration as an assistant principal and leading the School Attendance Review Board process for several years. For the past eight years, he has been Principal at Escondido High School.
Watkins attended California Lutheran University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Life Science, and Secondary Teaching. He then earned his Master’s Degree in Administration from Azusa Pacific University.
According to the Escondido High School District, “Rich Watkins is a student-centered leader, believing in the importance of building relationships to support students in all areas of their high school career. He has collaborated with students, parents, staff and the community to facilitate academic and behavioral growth for all students. Rich’s experience and dedication will be an asset as he continues to support students in this new role. Following the retirement of Dr. Barbara Gauthier, currently in this position, Mr. Watkins will begin serving as Director of Pupil Services and Intervention on July 1, 2017.”
