The qualifications to join are as follows. Be at least 50 years old; be able to work a minimum of 16 to 20 hours per month; be able to be on call for 24 hours on the day of your duty; be able to lift approximately 40 pounds with a partner; be able to drive at night; pass a background check including DMV and Live Scan (fingerprinting); possess a valid California driver’s license and have access to the internet for website and email.
Some of the volunteer duties involve serving the public by providing a broad range of logistic, administrative, and public education support to the department.
Support volunteers deliver fire department inter-station mail; pick up and deliver supplies and equipment as needed; provide citizen assistance (information and directions) while at fire stations or while on duty in the assigned fire department vehicle; assist fire department personnel with information displays, presentations, and special events; and set up and maintain a respite area for firefighting personnel at fires and other extended incidents.
Training is provided to qualified applicants. This volunteer program is ideal for retired individuals interested in joining a hardworking team that shares a commitment to provide top-quality service to the Escondido community.
