On June 17, 2018 at approximately 11:00 PM a 17 year old male from Escondido, CA was driving a 2003 Toyota RAV4 on SR-78 eastbound approaching Broadway in the #2 lane at approximately 65 MPH within the city of Escondido, CA. An unknown male had been driving a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee on SR-78 eastbound in the #2 lane when it stalled for unknown reasons just west of the intersection with Broadway. A 38 year old male from Escondido, CA stopped to help the driver of the Jeep push the Jeep out of the lanes. The unknown Escondido male who was driving the Jeep, was standing at the driver’s door of the Jeep pushing it and steering it with his right hand. The 38 year old male from Escondido was helping to push the Jeep at the right rear corner, when the 17 year old Escondido male driving the 2003 Toyota RAV4 failed to observe the Jeep stopped ahead of his location. Due to the 17 year old Escondido male failing to observe the stopped Jeep, he allowed the front of the Toyota RAV4 to collide with the 38 year old Escondido male standing at the right rear of the Jeep, resulting in fatal injuries to the 38 year old Escondido male. After the Toyota RAV4 struck the 38 year old Escondido male and caused fatal injuries, the Toyota RAV4 then struck the right rear of the Jeep. After the Toyota RAV4 struck the right rear of the Jeep, it then veered to the right and collided with a 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup truck, which was stopped in the #3 lane to the right of the Jeep. The unknown Escondido male who was driving the Jeep was knocked to the roadway and suffered head trauma. After the collision, the 17 year old Escondido male fled the collision scene on foot. After extensive follow up, The 17 year Escondido male was located at the Rally’s restaurant in Escondido, CA and was determined to be the driver of the Toyota RAV4.
The male driver of the Jeep survived and was transported to Palomar Medical Center with major head injuries. His status is unknown at the time of this release.
The male driver of the Toyota RAV4 was determined to be under the influence and was arrested.
The freeway lanes near this location were intermittently affected from the time of the collision until approximately 6:00 AM.
The incident remains under investigation.
UPDATE: The decedent was 38-year-old Octavio Escatel, who resided in Escondido.
