DUI driver kills one in head on collision

Friday at about 8 p.m. a 20-year-old male from Vista was driving a Toyota Tacoma northbound on Centre City Parkway, north of Jesmond Dene Road, wrong-way within the southbound lane.  A 74-year-old man from Escondido was traveling southbound in a Nissan Murano approaching the Toyota’s location.  The two vehicles crashed head on within the southbound lane.  

According to the California Highway Patrol, fire personnel and CHP officers responded to the scene and rendered aid to the involved parties.  Both drivers sustained major injuries during the collision and were transported to Palomar Medical Center.  Unfortunately, the 74-year-old driver of the Nissan succumbed to his injuries and died at Palomar Medical Center.  The 20-year-old driver of the Toyota sustained major injuries but is expected to recover.

The driver of the Toyota was arrested at the hospital for suspicion of driving under the influence.  

The roadway was affected from the time of the collision until approximately 10:30 p.m. when the lanes were re-opened. 

This incident remains under investigation.

    HEY, CITY COUNCIL —- is this acceptable? Failing to renew the grant means more of this! Want to rethink your position Olga or are you going to continue to kill Escondido residents by hiding under your “education” for drunk drivers platform?
