Donald McLeod, 79

Donald (Don) William McLeod, age 79, passed away on December 7, 2020, in Lakeland, Florida.  An amazing person who was loved and respected by so many, he will be dearly missed.

Mr. McLeod was born on July 28, 1941, in San Diego, California to Roderick and Margaret McLeod.  He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather (“Honcho”).   Mr. McLeod is survived by his wife, Michelle McLeod, 4 children, Michael (Kathleen) McLeod, Barbara McLeod Foster (Don Neubaum), Laura  (Jay) McLeod-Hartman, and Jacob (Lanie) Platt; and 9 grandchildren; brother Roderick McLeod; sisters, Margaret (Howard) Rosenthal and Ann (Steve) Bassett and sister-in-law Leslie McLeod.  His parents, brothers, Stephen McLeod and Larry McLeod, and sister-in-law Lynn McLeod, precede him.

Mr. McLeod grew up in Escondido, California.  He graduated from Escondido High School in 1959, and from San Diego State University in 1964.   He was Vice President of Regulatory and Public Affairs and retired from GTE.

Don loved the beach, the ocean, and traveling.  He also took on mountain climbing to overcome his fear of heights. He climbed Mount Rainier, the Tetons, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, and Aconcagua, a mountain in Argentina. He even married the love of his life in a hot air balloon.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Don’s name to the Lakeland Regional Health Foundation (www.foundation.mylrh.org).

  1. Dona and I worked together with GTE from 1973 to 1993, the year I retired. A real gentleman, liked by everyone, and extraordinarily capable. He will be missed, of that I am certain.

I am so sorry to hear of Don’s passing. Don was pleasant to work for, and was a friend as well…..He always exhibited an upbeat attitude around his employees. I worked in Don’s department at GTE – Business Relations/Revenue Development in the ”Basic Studies Group” during the early 1980’s. My thoughts and prayers are with Don’s family. Sincerely, Kathy Mulholland.
