Sunday, May 24 will be the first time our Valley Center rodeo has a mounted cowboy shooting competition. Using two .45 caliber single action revolvers (like those used in the 1800’s) loaded with specially prepared blank ammunition, riders race through a “stage” (course) competing for best time and accuracy.

Cowboy mounted shooting is a CMSA event.

The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association is the fastest growing equestrian sport in the nation. Mounted shooting has multiple levels of skill, from Men’s division to Wrangler Class (11 and under.)

Valley Center’s own Kenny Lawson, wife Leann as well as kids Madison, Rylee and Dylan will be competing. Owner of Valley Center’s Silver Dollar Ranch, Kenny trains horses for all disciplines as well as cowboy mounted shooting. Kenny Lawson is 8th in the nation.

The Eliminator Competition starts at 9 a.m.; the Main Match, consisting of three stages, starts at 10 a.m. You’ve all seen westerns with men shooting from horses; now come see the real thing!
