Connie Hansen was surely “singing her way into Heaven” when she passed on June 6th of this year, at the milestone age of 90, with family by her side.
Mrs. Hansen’s talent for music surpassed all of the family members that have come before and after her. She tap danced her way from Oklahoma, where she was born in 1929, to California during her grade school years.
Then, attending Escondido High School with her husband-to-be, LeRoy Hansen, they were both in Glee Club together. Go Cougars, Class of ’48! They went on to be in Starlight Opera at Balboa Park in San Diego. Connie sang and LeRoy provided the comic-relief in the Musicals. Connie continued to share her beautiful voice while in the Church Choir, Escondido Oratorio Association, a local chorale group, and sang at many weddings for family and friends in town.
She led a very active family life! She water-skied at the Colorado River, rode dune-buggies on the beach in Rosarito, Mexico and the dunes of Ocotillo Wells. When their son, Mark, began Off-Road Racing, she and Leroy were part of the Los Campeones’ pit-crew for many, many years. She was always up for any adventure!
Which brings us to her “adventurous family.” Mrs. Hansen is survived by her daughter, Lesli Collins of Vista, California; her son Mark Hansen of St. David, Arizona; her youngest daughter, Shari Matarelli of Pottsboro, Texas; two step brothers, James Phipps and Mike Phipps of Texas and a younger sister, Jackie Johnson of Oklahoma. She has nieces and nephews still residing in Escondido, and Grandkids from Escondido, Colorado, Arizona and as far away as Lisbon, Portugal!
The family waited some time to make this announcement, all the while hoping it would be safe enough for all to gather to have a Celebration of Life. However, they have decided to err on the side of caution by not doing so at this time.
Mrs. Hansen attended Emmanuel Faith Church for many years. In addition to attending E.F.C.C. every Saturday night, while living at Silvergate, San Marcos since 2013, she also attended “Silvergate Church” each Thursday evening led by Pastor Jim McClintock who became a beloved prayer-partner.
The family suggests that donations, if desired, could be made to Pastor Jim’s ministry at “Breath of Life Ministries,” 1365 McDonald Rd., Fallbrook, CA. 92028.
