A fatal collision involving a motorcyclist occurred on December 20, 2020 at approximately 9:55 PM. A 48-year-old male from Chula Vista was riding a Harley Davidson Softail on the Centre City Parkway on-ramp to I-15 Southbound at a high rate of speed. For reasons that are still under investigation, as the Harley Davidson transitioned from the ramp to the mainline lanes the motorcycle sideswiped a Toyota Tundra traveling in the far-right mainline freeway lane. The Toyota was being driven by a 57-year-old male form San Diego. The initial contact between the Toyota and the Harley Davidson caused the motorcycle to lose control and the rider to be ejected onto the mainline freeway lanes. After the rider was ejected and before the emergency personnel arrived at the scene multiple vehicles struck the body of the rider.
CHP and Escondido Fire personnel responded to the scene and initially closed all southbound lanes. Unfortunately, the rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After the initial closure, the HOV and left side of the mainline freeway lanes were opened to allow traffic to pass. The #3, #4, and #5 lanes were closed for the duration of the on-scene investigation. All lanes were opened at approximately 2:00 AM.
This incident remains under investigation. Should a member of the public have witnessed this collision, they are encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol at 858-637-3800.
