Ten-year-old Hà narrates the pivotal year in her life when she and her family flee the war in Vietnam and make the long journey to America. Once there, Hà copes with learning English and the taunts of cruel children. She also witnesses her brothers’ and mother’s struggle to find their own places in the community. Drawing on each other’s support, as well as the help of a few kind neighbors and classmates, Hà and her family eventually find their way.

The Vietnam War and refugee crisis are not easy subjects but Hà is brave and funny, and her singular voice illuminates her and her family’s struggle to navigate a strange land and maintain hope.

“Inside Out and Back Again,” a New York Times bestseller, Newbery Honor Book, and a winner of the National Book Award, is inspired by the author’s personal experience as a young immigrant.
