Rincón Literario (The Literary Corner), Escondido Public Library’s Bilingual Book Discussion Group, will meet on Saturday, July 25, 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in the Library’s Turrentine Room. Me llamo Bud, No Buddy/Bud, Not Buddy, a Newbery Award winner by Christopher Paul Curtis, is the selected book for July. Copies of the book are available through the Escondido Public Library catalog and can be reserved.
Me llamo Bud, No Buddy/Bud, Not Buddy, is the story of 10-year-old, orphaned African-American, Bud Caldwell, who lives in Flint, Michigan. It takes place in 1936 during the Great Depression. The few items Bud has left of his mother, who has passed away, include: a blanket, a bag of rocks, a photograph of his mother as a child, and fliers that show Herman E. Calloway and his jazz band. Feeling unwanted, unloved, and alone, Bud sets out on a most remarkable quest—to find Calloway, the man he thinks is his father. The musical motif throughout Me llamo Bud, No Buddy/Bud, Not Buddy complements Escondido Public Library’s 2015 Summer Reading theme, Read to the Rhythm!, In addition to participating in Rincón Literario, readers can sign-up online at library.escondido.org/SRC or at a Library Information Desk through July 25 to read for prizes, and enjoy special musical and programs.
Cecy Rayphole, Rincón Literario facilitator, commented, “Book discussions bring people together to share their views, experience different perspectives and cultures, and discover what they have in common. Rincón Literario is an excellent forum for this exchange and also provides an opportunity to practice or improve reading or speaking in either English or Spanish in a supportive setting.”
Rincón Literario will meet next month, on Saturday, August 29 to discuss the bittersweet Bajo la misma estrella/ The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
This program is free and open to the public. For more information about future Rincón Literario selections and the Library’s Summer Reading Clubs, visit library.escondido.org or contact Cecy Rayphole, Senior Library Associate, at 760-839-4289 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
