Alternatives Medical Clinic will have an open house August 9, 5-8 p.m. Friday August 9, from 5-8 p.m. During the open house they will provide tours of their fixed base and mobile unit. The public is invited.
Alternatives Medical Clinic has a bit of history in Escondido. The original group of women who established the organization that was to become Alternatives Pregnancy Care Clinic in 1985, initially gave out food, formula and diapers from a storeroom closet in Escondido.
The community, and its needs, grew quickly. Soon this group of women began offering free pregnancy tests, and giving out a more diverse array of physical provisions, such as baby clothes, supplies and furniture. They also began speaking in schools, as requested. All services were free, volunteers ran the program, and financial support came from individual donors and churches who shared the same burden.
Ten years later, in the summer of 1995, the decision was made to further develop the organization. A new corporation, Alternatives Pregnancy Care Clinic, opened as a fully licensed medical clinic. Services were added, including Nurse Assessments, free pregnancy tests with verification, early pregnancy ultrasounds, prenatal vitamins and abstinence education for the youth, taught by licensed professionals.
In 2012 Alternatives became the first AAAHC accredited pregnancy clinic in the state of California. “Becoming accredited was an excellent way to show our community, our donors, and the patients that we are a medical clinic providing excellent healthcare to the patients that come here” said Tammy De Armas, CEO of Alternatives Medical Clinic.
In 2015 they purchased a custom designed medical mobile unit so they could replicate their services and travel in different local areas. Currently they are on several Palomar Campuses, including San Marcos, Escondido and Rancho Bernardo.
In 2017 the DBA was changed from Alternatives Women’s Center to Alternatives Medical Clinic. Most recently, they began STI/STD testing for both women and men in both the Escondido and mobile clinics.
The fixed base located on the corner of Juniper and 2nd is open Monday through Friday. All services continue to be free because of generous individuals and churches who contribute the necessary finances. In addition to the paid staff they also have nurses, doctors, childbirth educators, lawyers concerned individuals volunteering their time as advisors, board members, and office personnel.
AMC’s mission is to provide medical and educational services that empower women and men to make life affirming choices concerning their pregnancy and sexual health. They provide educational services, resources for new moms, and scholarship opportunities to those who have chosen life and continuing their education.
The open house is an excellent opportunity to see what the clinic does and meet the staff and board of directors.
