Shortly after sunrise on Saturday, November 16, volunteers of all ages will don leather gloves and work boots and pack up their rakes, pitchforks and paintbrushes while heading towards Kit Carson Park in Escondido.
The annual Serve Day, led by the Church at Rancho Bernardo (CRB), provides an opportunity to give back to the community and includes beautification projects not only in Kit Carson Park, but also at the Boys & Girls Club.
A few of this year’s planned projects include spreading over 70,000 pounds of mulch, clearing of vegetation, adding a fresh coat of paint to the Amphitheater, park buildings, bridges, and the planting of more than 50 trees. Thanks to donations by CRB members and others in the community, 1,500 Family Bags (including full-sized shampoo, body wash, deodorant, laundry detergent, toothbrushes and more) and 1,500 Hygiene kits and 150+ Thanksgiving Grocery bags will be assembled for families in need and homeless individuals.
Activities begin at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude at noon, followed by a celebratory barbecue. Serve Day is designed with input from the City of Escondido Mayor’s Office, Escondido Police Department and local school districts to ensure priority projects and needs are addressed. Supporters and dignitaries will have an opportunity to express their appreciation to the volunteers for their tireless efforts.
Now in its fourth year, Serve Day 2019 promises to be another exceptional experience for volunteers, as well as the community of Escondido. “By working with the City of Escondido and the Parks/Recreation Team, we ensure the tasks completed are truly value added. Persons of all ages, abilities and skill levels come together to enhance areas enjoyed and used by many,” said a spokesman for CRB.
