Senior Anglers welcome Fisherman’s Belly May 10

A leading chef for seafood, Yanni Hassir, will be sharing his knowledge of the kitchen and recipes at the May 10 meeting of the Senior Anglers of Escondido.  The Southern California waterman’s passion extends from the ocean to his kitchen. Focusing on food borne illnesses that can come from bacteria and parasites due to improper fish handling, Hassir created FishermansBelly.com. […]

The man who wanted to massacre as many people as possible in a Poway Synagogue on Saturday, April 27 is reportedly the same person who tried to burn down a mosque in downtown Escondido several weeks ago. This speculation is based on the fact that the suspect in the case published a “manifesto” that attacks both Jews and Muslims and […]

As the dinosaurs passed away, so will the dinosaur museum

Editorial

It’s a very sad thing to lose a precious educational resource like the Roynon Museum of Earth Science & Paleontology, which announced this week that it would be closing at the end of June. It was only open on Grand Avenue for about four years, but it’s a pretty good bet that once it’s gone it will be missed for […]

Maybe the mayor could run for president

EDITORIAL

I say that it’s time for Mayor Paul McNamara to consider tossing his cap in the ring.  Before the count gets to two dozen, which, in my mind, is the magic number when some people would start to lose interest. This is not an […]

A letter of marque was a government license in the Age of Sail that authorized a private person, known as a privateer or corsair, to attack and capture vessels of a nation at war with the issuer at the time when the ocean was lawless and all merchant vessels sailed armed for self-defense. This letter is symbolic, and personal […]

Animal Stewardship

Since joining the Legislature I have authored, co-authored and supported numerous bills aimed at protecting pets and wildlife. Fortunately, most of this legislation is now law. My bills include legislation that created the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Voluntary Fund, allowing taxpayers to check off contributions on their tax returns to support injured or sick wildlife. Another bill prohibits the sale […]

Protecting renters from rent hikes

Nothing affects the issue of affordable housing than that for the plight of renters in the housing market.  Sara, a single Mom of 2, works two jobs to support her rent, utilities, food, car, and kids’ expenses.  She pays the average rent in San Diego North County of $1,588 per month.  A 10% increase in rent would devastate her family’s […]

The Power of the Kingdom

“The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by […]
