Escondido Shines is sponsoring the annual Music in the Park free band concert, featuring bands from San Pasqual, Escondido and Orange Glen High Schools, Saturday, May 27, 6:30–8 p.m. at Kit Carson Amphitheater.
One of the performing bands will be the Escondido High School Concert Band, whose Director of Bands Phil Felix, told The Times-Advocate: “We will be performing with the two other traditional high schools in the city Orange Glen and San Pasqual, which will be led by Ted Meyer at Orange Glen and Brian Lund at San Pasqual.”
Felix said, “For our portion EHS will be performing two pieces on our own. The first is called ‘Lightning Field’ by John Mackey and the second is called ‘Hosts of Freedom’ by Karl L. King.
The three schools will combine to perform two pieces as a mass band, to perform “America the Beautiful” arranged by Carmen Dragon, and “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.
We asked Felix to tell us more about the EHS Concert Band. “EHS has sixty-five students in our band,” he said, “and we perform at many festivals throughout Southern California throughout the year. We offer performance classes such as jazz band, concert band, marching band, pep band, and two levels of choir.”
Besides Escondido Shines, other sponsors of the free concert are Escondido Rotary Club, Escondido Union School District, County of San Diego, the Escondido Charitable Foundation, Grande Laundry Place and the Escondido Union High School District.
